The Canine Good Citizen class practices skills for the 10 test items you and your dog must pass to get the AKC CGC certificate, including meeting friendly people politely and accepting petting and grooming; walking nicely on a loose leash alone and through a crowd; demonstrating Sit, Down, Stay, and Come; meeting another leashed dog; remaining calm during sight and sound distractions; and being separated from handler for 3 minutes. See www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm for details.
The pass/fail CGC test, given during the last day of class, is the gateway to many therapy dog programs and is accepted by some landlords and insurance companies as an indication of your dog's social skills and that you and your sidekick work well together as a team.
Prerequisite: Dogs must have graduated from a Basic Manners class or the equivalent with another program. Or know the four basic commands: sit, down, stay, and come. Dogs should not be overly shy, jump on people, or pull excessively on leash. Dogs cannot be aggressive towards people or other dogs.
Class session: Six weeks, Friday, 5:30pm-6:15pm. The first week is a mandatory orientation without dogs. The last week is the CGC evaluation.
This session will run from August 17th to September 28th. Please note we will not be having class on September 7th.
